Chapter 169 - 155: Marriage Alliance
Annabelle Leighton and Morgan Hayes were both people of action.
The day after Morgan Hayes proposed, they went and got their marriage license.
Isla Prescott was just finishing a prenatal check-up at the hospital when she heard the good news.
"Annie and Officer Hayes got their license," Isla Prescott excitedly told Shane Sterling, who was standing beside her.
"They certainly moved quickly."
"I wouldn’t say it was that fast for Annie. After all, she’s liked Officer Hayes for so long."
Shane Sterling nodded, wrapping an arm around Isla Prescott’s shoulder. "There’s been a lot of good news lately."
"What other good news?"
"Silas got married, too."
Isla Prescott froze. "You mean my brother?"
"Mhm."
"When did he get married? How come I didn’t know?"
"Last month. They didn’t have a wedding. I only just found out myself."
"Who’s the bride?"
"Luna Langley, from the Langley family."
’Luna Langley?’
Isla felt like she’d heard that name before.
She thought for a moment and quickly recalled that she had run into Silas Lockwood and Luna Langley once before while having dinner with Annabelle Leighton at a restaurant.
Seeing she was lost in thought, Shane Sterling asked, "You know her?"
"No, I don’t."
’I just remember she was a woman with a very elegant air about her.’
"Why did he get married so suddenly?" Isla asked.
Shane Sterling glanced at his wife. Her brows were knitted together, her reaction completely different from when she had just heard about Annabelle Leighton’s marriage.
"Why that look on your face?" A wave of jealousy washed over Shane Sterling. "Are you unhappy that Silas Lockwood got married?"
Sensing his jealousy, Isla quickly looped her arm through her husband’s and laughed. "They say pregnant women are the ones who tend to overthink things, but it seems to be the opposite in our house, doesn’t it? Don’t let your imagination run wild. Of course I’m not unhappy. I just think... there’s something a little strange about my brother’s marriage."
’Normally, people share the good news when they get married with their family and friends. But I knew nothing about Silas getting married, and Shane, his good friend, only found out a month later. Isn’t that strange?’
"It was a marriage of convenience," Shane said. "After Silas got sick, those old geezers on the Lockwood Group’s board of directors started stirring up trouble again. By the time Silas recovered and left the hospital, he’d basically lost control of the company. The funding for his biggest project was cut off, too."
When Silas Lockwood was pushed to the brink, Luna Langley extended a helping hand.
It’s unclear what agreement the two of them made, but the day after they got their license, the Langley Group invested in the Lockwood Group. The project that had been on the verge of collapse was revived, and Silas finally had the capital to go head-to-head with the board.
Hearing this, any joy Isla might have felt about her brother’s marriage vanished. It was obvious he had been cornered, and this marriage of convenience was likely his only way out.
It was a truly sobering thought.
After everything, Silas still couldn’t escape the fate of having to sacrifice his marriage to save the Lockwood Group.
"When did you see him?" Isla asked.
After she became pregnant and started taking it easy, Silas had checked in on her once on WeChat, but they hadn’t seen each other in a long time.
"I just saw him yesterday."
"How’s he doing?"
"He’s doing okay."
Isla nodded. "He hasn’t had it easy. I hope he can be happy in his marriage."
"You don’t have to worry about him," Shane comforted his wife. "A marriage of convenience might sound like a last resort, but to look on the bright side, the most important part of a marriage isn’t how it begins, but how the couple gets along and builds a life together. I know plenty of happily married couples who started with a strategic marriage. Who knows, maybe Silas will just get lucky."
