Chapter 175 - 161: Jumping Off a Building
Chapter 175 - 161: Jumping Off a Building
Outside of their close friends and family, almost no one knew that Silas Lockwood and Luna Langley were legally married.
Luna Langley never imagined that Silas Lockwood would publicly thank her on stage, which was tantamount to officially announcing his own marriage.
Everyone around them was applauding. Besides Shane Sterling, probably no one else in the room knew she was the "wife" Silas Lockwood had just mentioned, but Luna Langley’s heart was still pounding, and she found it impossible to remain calm.
Especially since Silas Lockwood had kept his eyes on her after he finished speaking.
「By the time the meeting ended, it was evening.」
Luna Langley ran into Silas Lockwood again in the guest lounge.
"Why did you add that to your speech?" Luna Langley asked.
"Which part? The one where I thanked you?"
"Yes."
"It’s because I truly owe my current success to your help. Without you, forget being president of the Lockwood Group—I might not even be able to set foot in the building anymore."
This wasn’t an exaggeration. It was the harsh reality.
The internal power struggles at the Lockwood Group had reached a cutthroat, life-or-death level when Silas Lockwood’s father passed away. Back then, Silas had managed to suppress those greedy beasts on his own. Later, when he fell ill and was ostracized, he would have been driven out by the board long ago if not for Luna Langley’s financial backing.
"Are you about to say I’m your benefactor again?" Luna Langley asked.
Silas Lockwood nodded. "Yes. It’s a fact that I’m indebted to you. I couldn’t get up on stage and boast about my own achievements without mentioning you at all."
Luna Langley fell silent. ’Silas really is a sincere and down-to-earth person.’
The two of them walked out of the venue together.
"Are you heading home?" Silas Lockwood asked.
Before Luna Langley could answer, her phone rang.
She glanced at the number on the screen, held up a hand to Silas Lockwood to signal for him to wait, and stepped aside to take the call.
It was the nursing home. They said that Luna Langley’s mother had an emotional breakdown after waking from her nap. She had run up to the rooftop and was threatening to jump.
"Do whatever you can to calm her down! I’m on my way now!"
Luna Langley hung up and ran outside in a complete panic.
Silas Lockwood had faintly overheard the word "jump" and hurried after her.
"What’s wrong?"
"My mom’s at the nursing home. She’s threatening to jump. I have to get there now."
"I’ll go with you." Silas Lockwood gripped her shoulders. "Try not to panic. I’ll go get the car."
The reassuring strength in his gaze helped Luna Langley’s frayed nerves relax, if only a little.
"Okay."
Silas Lockwood went to get the car, and they rushed to the Meritopia Nursing Home together.
On the way there, Luna Langley stayed on the phone with a nurse from the home to get real-time updates on her mother, Serena Carter.
When they arrived, Serena Carter was still sitting on the rooftop railing.
"What exactly happened?" Luna Langley asked one of the staff members.
"We don’t know either. She was fine all day. After lunch, she even asked us to wheel her outside to get some sun. But when she woke up from her nap, something was wrong with her mood."
Luna Langley guessed her mother must have had a bad dream. Ever since her father and younger brother died in a car accident, her mental state had been volatile. On good days, she managed to block out her memories. But the moment she remembered something, or dreamed about the past, she would lose control.
"I’m going to go see her," Luna Langley said to Silas Lockwood.
"Okay."
Luna Langley went up to the rooftop. Her mother, Serena Carter, was sitting on the railing, staring blankly at the clouds.
"Mom," Luna Langley called out.
Serena Carter slowly turned her head. When she saw Luna Langley, she gave a small smile.
"Luna, I dreamed about your father and your brother. They said they want to take me with them."
