Chapter 126: The Deep Jungle
Chapter 126: The Deep Jungle
Raiden paused at the moment to survey his surroundings.
They had unknowingly walked too deep into the territory, and the silence in the surroundings unnerved him. He tried to use his watch, phone or anything to contact the base again, but once again he came up with nothing. Whatever jammer they have been using, it was working very well. Way too well.
"All right, Woolie, we need to go back now. This place is too dangerous. We can’t stay here. Try going towards the base, but keep changing your paths. Don’t walk in a straight line, okay? We need to go back before that Platinum Battle Master catches us." Raiden patted the back of Woolie’s head with a determined expression on his face.
He had no idea who this Platinum Battle Master hunting him was. Was it Bai Zang or someone else exactly who was after him?
They will get out of here, in one way or another. He refused to give up now.
Woolie, who heard his voice, started jogging back, but this time slowly. He too felt the pressure from the surroundings and kept a strict eye out, getting himself ready at a moment’s notice to jump into the battle.
But even after walking back for a while, they faced not a single terror beast in their way, which was highly unusual given that Raiden’s body still had that sweet scent on him.
Either this didn’t work on big and stronger Terra Beasts, or there was something keeping all of them at bay. Something so dangerous that the other Terra Beasts didn’t dare to get too close to Raiden, even after smelling that scent.
Raiden was really hoping it was the first one. But knowing his luck, he didn’t bet on it. The journey backwards was peaceful as Raiden kept an eye on his map.
150 KM.
140 KM.
133 KM.
121 KM
109 KM.
By now, Raiden had switched directions multiple times, and he even grabbed some fruits and mints and everything to rub on his body to get rid of that smell. It worked somewhat as the smell got weaker according to Neva, but he still didn’t feel relaxed. The mysterious Platinum Battle Master felt like a blade hanging on top of his head, with the jungle only doing the work of spooking him.
But he was at the last stretch of the jungle, where he could get rid of one of the dangers. Just as he relaxed after seeing the invisible boundary in the distance, an alarmed Neva’s voice rang out from the top of his head.
"Sha Sha!!" Rai Rai!! There are a lot of Terra Beasts incoming!! Hundreds, no Thousands of them!!!
"What did you say?!" Before Raiden could react to it, he heard a deep rumble coming from all around him. It didn’t feel like footsteps, but like a storm.
In a few seconds, just a kilometre away from the invisible boundary, Raiden and his gang found themselves surrounded by Terra Beasts on all sides.
ROAR!!!
Raiden’s heart sank at the sheer number of the Terra Beasts in front of them. There were at least a few thousand Terra Beasts that had surrounded the group, leaving virtually no escape path.
As far as Raiden’s eye could see, there were Terra Beasts: in the sky, on the land, under the ground.
The crowd of Terra Beasts was so dense that he couldn’t even see past them.
But the strange thing was, they all stopped a few hundred metres before reaching him. None of them dared to come close or move a muscle. They just watched him from afar like he was a prey trapped between them. Looking at the crowd of Terra Beasts full of Gold and Silver, even a Platinum would have a hard time escaping from it.
"Woolie!!"
Woolie’s body started to warm up in response to the crowd of Terra Beasts as the sky darkened with thunder clouds. Emperor Woolie was a fighter, and he wasn’t afraid of anyone.
"Woolie, wait, something is very wrong. Let’s observe a situation a bit more." Raiden spoke with a grim expression on his face.
Charging headfirst into this crowd won’t do. They will be dead long before they can get out. Maybe Woolie’s body could take it, but his can’t. He was much more fragile.
Raiden was waiting, waiting for the mastermind behind the crowd to show himself to them.
He didn’t have to wait very long before his wish was fulfilled.
Roar!!!
A long guttural and primal roar echoed in the air as a large shadow fell over Raiden’s head. Before he could see it, it crashed into the clearing in front of him, kicking up a cloud of dust in the air.
For a few seconds, Raiden wasn’t able to see what the behemoth looked like, but when he did, a feeling of terror seized his heart.
Standing in front of Raiden was a beast whose body invoked terror at first sight.
Fifty meters of black scales that absorbed light rather than reflected it, each one edged with a faint iridescent sheen that shifted between deep violet and cold blue depending on the angle. Four legs built like siege weapons, claws the length of grown men, leaving cracks in stone with resting weight alone.
The wings folded against its body like collapsed fortifications, spanning eighty meters fully extended, the membrane between the bones so dark it looked like cut-out holes in the air. Its head was angular and long, with horns sweeping back in a crown of bone. When it breathed, the air around its jaws warped with heat, distorting the air around it.
"ROOAARRRR!!!!!!!"
It roared so loudly that the surrounding air itself was displaced, with a sonic wave emerging from it, destroying the surroundings around him while kicking up a cloud of dust and almost blowing Raiden away.
When the beast locked eyes with them, Raiden felt a pressure like never before. The worst scenario in his head had come true, as he came face to face with one of the Overlords of the Wild.
The Black Dragon.
