Chapter 1560 - 836: Gentlemen's Club
Chapter 1560 - 836: Gentlemen's Club
Jimmy glanced at the invitation before tossing it onto Ruiz's desk: "Why?"
Ruiz waved at the door, Jimmy casually closed it, and Ruiz finally said: "It's tradition. New York is such a complicated city, many people need various venues to communicate with others. This has led to the creation of countless clubs and other gatherings, many of which are completely hidden from the average person."
Jimmy: "Like this gentleman's club?"
Ruiz nodded: "Exactly. They usually cater to people in specific industries, such as billionaires, Wall Street executives, corporate executives, etc. Besides specific events held at certain times, most of the time it's pretty free."
Jimmy frowned, he had previously met Ruiz several times at clubs, and they had also changed locations, indicating that Ruiz was one of the invitees too, "You too? Since when?"
Ruiz: "A few years ago."
Considering however many years ago, it seems it was after Ruiz became head of the anti-gang unit, and counting the time, it wasn't right after he became the head, but after he gained some power...
Jimmy finally sensed some movements among the New York elite, previously he was always in the role of a thug, even after being promoted to Supervisory Special Agent, renowned within the FBI, outsiders still viewed him as a minor character, folks at the upper levels wouldn't care. If they needed to contact the FBI for anything, they would never come to Jimmy. But now, after the first fire ignited, even though Jimmy's internal rank didn't change, some people elevated him to their level, still at the lower echelon, but reachable.
Jimmy: "Is there more?"
Ruiz shrugged, pushed the invitation Jimmy had thrown on the table back to him: "I don't know... I'm being honest, I just don't know."
Jimmy casually picked up the invitation, nodded to Ruiz and stood up, "Seems it really is necessary to check it out, thanks, Ruiz."
Ruiz waved, and Jimmy turned and left his office.
As Jimmy walked, he smiled to himself shaking his head, it seems Ruiz might be starting to interact with those so-called elite figures too, he said he didn't know, which means he himself isn't sure how many more people are above those he's contacting.
Recently things haven't been going too smoothly, Jimmy returned to his office pondering, ultimately deciding to attend the club event. Previously, it was unknown, but now that the opportunity arises, it's worth seeing what mischief they're up to, although it's better to ask Kevin ahead tonight.
Kevin, as NYPD Commissioner, is undoubtedly a big shot, yet he never took Jimmy to places to interact with higher-ups, perhaps Kevin feels Jimmy isn't at that level yet, or maybe Kevin lacks the authority to invite Jimmy...
In reality, things weren't quite as Jimmy imagined, Kevin certainly interacts with different strata, but due to Kevin's father formerly holding a high position, Kevin actually had exposure to more senior figures and connections early on, moreover, his circles differ from those of the FBI, the invitation Jimmy received wasn't extended to Kevin either, hence there's nothing insider he can share.
However, some things are analogous, Kevin did give Jimmy some tips on what to pay attention to, leaving the rest to Jimmy himself.
Attending a gala requires a touch of formality, Jimmy left the office early to go home, wash up and change clothes, then arrived punctually at the gentleman's club, handed over the invitation, Jimmy smiled as he entered the club and headed to the gala scene, barely taking a sip of champagne when an old white-haired gentleman approached him, "Thank you for attending our fundraising gala, Detective Yang, I'm Aaron Ham, the manager here."
Jimmy smiled, raising his glass: "Thank you, Mr. Ham. Excuse me, this gala is raising funds for whom?"
Ham smiled and replied: "The Rare Disease Foundation, don't worry, Detective Yang, can we talk privately?"
Jimmy raised an eyebrow, "Of course, please."
Ham led Jimmy to the side of the gala hall, turned into a balcony; Jimmy lifted his glass gesturing slightly, took a sip, looked at Ham and said: "I think we can talk now."
Ham smiled: "Detective Yang, this shouldn't be your first time at our club, right? Agent Ruiz has been a member for several years. May I introduce you to our club?"
Jimmy nodded, Ham proceeded with an overview of the club, including event content, facilities, etc., then mentioned they regularly hold various activities allowing elite professionals to interact.
Finally, Ham took out a dark gold card and a business card from his pocket, "Would Detective Yang be interested in joining us?"
Jimmy casually took them, thankfully they didn't dish out something like a gold card, the card's material is solid, but distinctly lighter than metallic cards, just has a nice touch with a slightly sandy texture, "Of course, I also hope to make friends with elite professionals from other industries, thank you, Mr. Ham."
Mr. Ham, as the club manager, was evidently very competent, from Jimmy's perspective, he was personable, though Jimmy is Asian and the other is a white gentleman, still didn't show any discomfort, the club introduction was brief but directly emphasized without wasting Jimmy's time, no superfluous words, Jimmy felt at ease just like a spring breeze.
