Chapter 524 - 516: Arrangements
Prince Shou’s words were genuinely concerned about them, which touched Lin Youning, and her eyes turned red as she pouted like a spoiled child.
But her eyes were red, and anyone could tell she was about to cry. Prince Shou’s nose also tingled slightly, "Child, alright, alright, I won’t say anymore, does this make it better?"
Prince Shou said he wouldn’t speak, yet he continued, "Your mother left early. After you went missing, she too passed. Nothing in this world holds my interest anymore. If your elder brother weren’t around, I wouldn’t have survived in this world on my own. I’ve been avoiding the world all these years because I’ve stopped desiring anything. Now that your elder brother has found you, my only desire is for your mother to be at peace, and I cannot watch you suffer any injustice in this world."
Prince Shou usually maintained a cold and emotionless demeanor, but now his expression was somewhat forlorn, and his voice was choked, "Back then with your mother and me, there was a lot of hardship, and she left with regrets. I will never forgive myself for that in this lifetime. My greatest wish is for you to be happy. Now, even seeing you and your brother suffer a little makes my heart ache. I know you’re grown, and you have your own thoughts, but things aren’t as simple as they seem."
Hearing this, Lin Youning couldn’t help but cry. When Gu Yifeng saw Sister Ning crying, he held her and consoled her softly, "You still have a child in your belly, such emotional fluctuations aren’t good for the child, you must control your emotions."
Lin Youning nodded repeatedly, yet she couldn’t stop her tears. Although she did not cry out loud, she was visibly heartbroken. She wanted to control herself to avoid worrying those around her, but she bit her lip hard, twisting Gu Yifeng’s heart with pain as he watched.
All he could do was hold her tightly, unsure of what to say.
He knew Sister Ning always longed for family since she was little, it’s what she always yearned for deep down. Now, with Prince Shou saying these things, he pulled down the dam in Sister Ning’s heart, so how could she not be upset?
Prince Shou, standing there, was filled with mournfulness, and the room fell silent. Finally, it was Gu Yifeng who spoke, "Father-in-law rest assured, I have already made arrangements for this matter. There will always be someone watching Mrs. Dong and her son. If Mrs. Dong has any other intentions, they will intervene immediately. That kind of situation will not happen."
Prince Shou glanced at Gu Yifeng. Though he hadn’t involved himself in matters for years, he knew things were not that simple. After comforting Sister Ning and leaving the room, Gu Yifeng understood where his father-in-law’s worries and doubts lay before speaking up.
"Mrs. Dong has an incurable ailment and will never be able to speak. As for Brother Zong, even if Mrs. Dong does have intentions in the future, she knows as long as she can’t speak, writing a few words explains nothing," Gu Yifeng said indifferently.
Prince Shou looked up at him, "I’m not forcing you to do anything. You know Sister Ning’s temperament. I don’t want her worried over such matters, you understand this."
"I understand," Gu Yifeng didn’t elaborate further.
The facts weren’t disclosed to Sister Ning to prevent her from feeling guilty. He understood Sister Ning had a kind heart, and knowing this, she would never feel at ease.
After seeing off Prince Shou, Gu Yifeng returned, finding Sister Ning still solemn. He approached and held her, "Still upset?"
"I know father’s troubles, so I worry even more about Brother," Sister Ning lowered her head, "He came to talk to me about that matter a few days ago, didn’t he?"
Gu Yifeng nodded, "It’s complicated, so you should persuade your brother not to confront father too directly."
Lin Youning nodded.
That day, Sister Ning had no spirit left. Although she didn’t go out, she knew what was said outside about Marquis Dingyuan favoring her so much the legitimate wife of the mansion was sent away.
Having experienced so much, Sister Ning no longer cared about such things.
But Gu Yifeng worried, not letting her leave the East Courtyard, while he visited Marquis Mansion daily. After Sister Hui fell ill, her health did not recover for half a month, and as time passed, it had been almost half a year. Sister Ning’s belly had dropped, and although birth was still some time away, she felt like it could happen any moment, which made her not dare to go anywhere. Only after hearing Sister Hui remained unwell did she visit.
"How did you get so thin? Didn’t the Imperial Physician say there’s nothing wrong? Why are you still unwell?" Sister Ning was startled seeing Sister Hui.
She didn’t know the details, and after Sister Hui was questioned, she became even more ashamed, unsure how to face Sister Ning, and lowered her head without speaking, unwilling to lie.
Sister Ning sighed seeing this, "Is it because your mother was sent away? If she spent her life in the mansion, she’d never experience the freedom of the outside world, some reasons are inconvenient to tell you, but understand that your father is not heartless."
"I know," Sister Hui whispered. "It’s my mother’s fault."
Sister Ning was slightly stunned, wanting to ask if she knew, but the words wouldn’t come out, leaving only silence, wondering how Sister Hui found out, as such matters shouldn’t have been disclosed to her.
"Now you must recuperate well, the New Year is approaching, and the household still needs you. Aunt Lv doesn’t know much, and I belong to the other mansion, so it’s not my place to intervene," Lin Youning sighed, "If you’re unhappy, you can go to Prime Minister Liu’s Mansion and spend time with them."
"No, I just don’t feel like moving these days. Besides, it’s more important that my aunt due for childbirth rests well," Sister Hui no longer wants to think about her mother, reflecting on all her mother did, yet seeing those whom her mother wronged treating her kindly all along.
Thinking back to how she once informed her grandmother, she felt ashamed facing those who had been kind to her. Lin Youning noticed Sister Hui seemed preoccupied, assuming it was due to learning about her mother’s misdeeds, so she did not delve into it.
After sitting for a while, she got up and left.
As Lin Youning approached full-term, the household matters were largely kept from her, unaware of Sister Hui’s actions, although Shanmoi and Hailan were aware, and thus harbored opinions toward Sister Hui.
